The biggest pandemic fraud scheme in American history has Democrats squirming.
Ilhan Omar can't outrun her role in creating the disaster.
And Ilhan Omar just said two words about Minnesota fraud that left Trump administration fuming.
Omar Takes Zero Responsibility For $250 Million Fraud She Enabled
Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar stonewalled when pressed about her legislation that paved the way for the largest pandemic fraud in U.S. history.
Fox News reporter Nicholas Ballasy cornered Omar on Capitol Hill with a simple question: "Do you regret pushing for that bill, the MEALS Act? Do you think it led to the fraud?"
Her response stunned even seasoned Washington observers.
"Absolutely not, it did help feed kids," Omar fired back.¹
Translation: Omar has zero regrets about writing legislation that criminals exploited to steal $250 million from taxpayers.
The MEALS Act that Omar introduced on March 11, 2020 stripped away critical oversight requirements for federal child nutrition programs during the pandemic.
That legislation waived site inspections and allowed bulk food distribution with almost no verification process.
Fraudsters saw their opening and took it.
More than 75 individuals have been charged in the "Feeding Our Future" scheme, where criminals falsely claimed to serve 91 million meals.²
FBI Director Kash Patel called it "one of the worst" fraud cases in Minnesota history.³
The scheme exploited the exact waivers Omar's bill created.
Criminals fabricated meal counts, forged invoices, and invented hundreds of fake distribution sites across Minnesota.
They used the stolen money for $2 million mansions, $9,000 monthly Nordstrom shopping sprees, and overseas transfers that investigators believe funded terrorism.⁴
Omar's Safari Restaurant Connections Raise Serious Questions
Omar refuses to acknowledge problems with her bill despite personal ties to convicted fraudsters.
Salim Ahmed Said co-owned Safari Restaurant in Minneapolis, where Omar held her 2018 congressional victory party.⁵
Said was convicted in August for stealing over $12 million by falsely claiming to serve 3.9 million "phantom" meals.
Omar attended events at Safari Restaurant "on numerous occasions," according to investigative journalist Bill Glahn.⁶
"She had been inside the facility on numerous occasions and couldn't put 2 and 2 together?" Glahn asked. "Either she's terminally naive, or knew and didn't care."
Omar also received $7,400 in campaign donations from three convicted fraudsters – money her campaign only returned after federal indictments came down in 2022.⁷
Trump Cracks Down on Minnesota Fraud Epidemic
President Trump made Minnesota fraud central to his immigration enforcement strategy.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched investigations into whether stolen dollars reached al-Shabaab, the Somalia-based terrorist group.⁸
Trump ended Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of Somali migrants, branding Minnesota "a hub of money laundering activity."⁹
ICE enforcement operations targeted individuals with deportation orders in Minneapolis.
Some defendants charged in Feeding Our Future are part of Minnesota's Somali diaspora, though the scheme's ringleader is not.
"Stealing from the federal government equates to stealing from the American people," FBI Special Agent Alvin Winston stated.¹⁰
Trump hammered Governor Tim Walz for allowing the fraud to spiral out of control.
But Omar wrote the bill that stripped away safeguards preventing exactly this type of theft.
State officials identified fraud warning signs in July 2019 – months before the pandemic.¹¹
Officials documented "concerning behavior" from Feeding Our Future founder Aimee Bock, later convicted as ringleader.
State workers immediately recognized meal count claims were "not consistent" and "not realistic."¹²
Then Omar's MEALS Act passed, removing the remaining oversight.
Government Recovers Just $75 Million of $250 Million Stolen
Prosecutors say much stolen money disappeared overseas or got spent on luxury goods impossible to recover.
Only around $75 million has been recovered as of early 2025.¹³
That means $175 million in taxpayer money meant for hungry children simply vanished.
Many perpetrators funded lavish lifestyles while real children went hungry.
Omar's two-word response shows stunning indifference to suffering her bill enabled.
She claimed the MEALS Act "did help feed kids" despite overwhelming evidence criminals used her bill to steal hundreds of millions.
The Trump Administration isn't finished.
Investigations continue into how Omar's bill became a blueprint for fraud.
And Omar's refusal to accept responsibility makes clear she learned nothing from the biggest pandemic fraud in American history.
