Pete Hegseth just torched 47 years of American foreign policy failure in a single Pentagon briefing.
Now Democrats are screaming "endless war" – the same people who watched Iran fund every roadside bomb that killed American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan for two decades.
What Hegseth said next is why they want him gone.
Hegseth Told Democrats at the Pentagon Briefing That Operation Epic Fury Is Not Iraq
Operation Epic Fury is now in its fifth day, and standing before reporters Monday, Defense Secretary Hegseth didn't apologize, didn't hedge, and didn't lecture anyone about the complexity of the Middle East.
He told the truth.
"We didn't start this war," Hegseth said. "But under President Trump, we're finishing it."
For 47 years, the Iranian regime chanted "Death to America" – not quietly, not politely, but as official state policy.
They funded the car bombs in Beirut that killed 241 American servicemen in 1983.
They wired money to the Quds Force commanders who armed the militias planting IEDs under the boots of American troops in Iraq.
They spent decades building an underground nuclear program – enriching uranium to 60% purity, burying facilities 70 feet underground – while their diplomats smiled and stalled at negotiating tables.
JD Vance said the Iranian delegation in Geneva kept insisting enrichment was for civilian purposes.
The Trump administration's response was exactly right: "Why are you building your enrichment facilities 70 feet underground?"
Iran had no answer – because there wasn't one.
Why Hegseth Said Operation Epic Fury Will Never Become an Endless War
"No stupid rules of engagement, no nation-building quagmire, no democracy-building exercise, no politically correct wars," he told reporters. "We fight to win, and we don't waste time or lives."
This is the direct answer to every failed military intervention of the last 30 years.
Operation Epic Fury launched February 28th and within 24 hours had struck over 1,000 military, intelligence, and government sites across Iran.
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei – the man who spent decades directing terror against the United States – is dead.
CENTCOM confirmed six American service members made the ultimate sacrifice in the opening days of the operation, all members of the 103rd Sustainment Command out of Des Moines, Iowa.
Trump honored them directly: "True American patriots who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, even as we continue the righteous mission for which they gave their lives."
While Barack Obama drew red lines and erased them, while Biden surrendered to Iranian proxy attacks on American bases across the region, Trump drew one line – and then removed the regime that kept crossing it.
The Left's Endless War Lie
Senate Democrats immediately howled about "endless war" and demanded congressional approval.
These are the same Democrats who watched Iran arm Hezbollah, fund Hamas, supply the Houthis who attacked American naval vessels, and walk away from three rounds of nuclear negotiations in Geneva with nothing but stalling tactics.
Sen. Rick Scott put it plainly on Fox News: "I want to thank President Trump for having the guts to do this. This is what other Presidents had not been willing to do. The world is a safer place."
Sen. Dave McCormick added that the President "acted completely within his Constitutional authority."
The opposition isn't about constitutional principles.
It's about the same failed bipartisan consensus that gave Iran decades of breathing room to build the most dangerous missile arsenal in the Middle East.
Hegseth's three-part mission is the clearest military objective America has stated in a generation: destroy the missile threat, destroy the navy, no nukes.
Not nation-building.
Not a decade of occupation followed by a humiliating withdrawal.
Iran was building a conventional shield around its nuclear blackmail ambitions – a missile and drone arsenal so large that no country would dare confront it.
Trump saw it coming and acted before the shield was complete.
The first time in a generation an American president looked at Iranian aggression and decided the answer was not another round of strongly worded letters.
The Ayatollah is gone, the nuclear program is rubble, and for the first time since 1979, the Iranian people have a chance to take their country back.
