Gavin Newsom Just Surrendered the 2028 Race to the Woman Who Already Lost

Kamala Harris lost to Donald Trump and immediately started telling everyone she's thinking about doing it again.

Gavin Newsom spent two years barnstorming South Carolina with "Gavin 2028" buttons at his events while insisting he hadn't decided anything..

The man who called himself the Democrats' best hope just handed that title back to the woman who already lost.

The setting alone tells you everything you need to know about where Democrat politics is right now.

Jake Tapper was fly fishing with Gavin Newsom in Montana when the governor of California made his big political declaration.

Not a press conference. Not a policy announcement.

A fishing trip with a CNN anchor – and Newsom used it to announce he'd stand down for the woman his party has spent two years quietly trying to move past.

"I wouldn't run if she ran," Newsom told Tapper. "I wouldn't do that to her."

Tapper seemed genuinely thrown off.

"If she runs, you will not?" he asked.

"Of course not," Newsom said. "Who needs that?"

The man selling himself as California's gift to the Democrat Party just publicly admitted he's afraid of a rematch with Kamala Harris.

The Woman He's Afraid of Already Lost Once

Harris has not announced she's running.

Back in April, standing in front of a crowd at Al Sharpton's National Action Network convention, she told the audience chanting "run again" that she might do it.

"I might, I might," she said. "I'm thinking about it."

Harris released a memoir about the 2024 race, went on a national book tour, and has been dropping hints ever since.

That's not a campaign.

That's a book tour with presidential ambitions stapled to it.

Democrats who actually want to win in 2028 should be terrified by two things: that Harris is seriously considering another run, and that the field's most prominent alternative just stepped aside before she even decided.

The RealClearPolitics polling average has Harris leading Democrat hopefuls at 24.5% to Newsom's 13.5%.

But on Polymarket, where people put real money on outcomes, Harris sits at just 8% odds.

AOC is ahead of her at 19%.

So is Jon Ossoff at 16%.

Newsom himself trails the market at 12.7%.

The activists love Harris.

The bettors think she loses again.

Newsom just decided that problem is someone else's to solve.

California Has Never Produced a President Since Reagan

Here's the pattern Newsom's own team privately acknowledges: California doesn't produce presidents.

Since Ronald Reagan left Sacramento for the White House in 1981, the state has sent one failed White House contender after another to the national stage – Pete Wilson, Jerry Brown, Tom Steyer, and most recently Kamala Harris herself.

Newsom looked at that track record and decided the answer was to campaign harder in South Carolina, hold CNN fishing trips, and wait for Harris to clear the field.

Meanwhile, his state is running a $68 billion deficit and Medi-Cal just required a $2.8 billion emergency bailout.

A South Carolina Democrat told Fox News that Newsom needs to explain his "many failures in California" before anyone hands him a national stage.

That's a Democrat saying it.

Not a Republican. Not a Trump supporter.

A Democrat in the state Newsom has spent years courting told him to explain himself first.

He hasn't.

Instead he went fishing in Montana and told Jake Tapper that Kamala Harris – the woman who lost to Donald Trump – has his unconditional support if she decides to try again.

What you just watched was the Democrat Party's 2028 strategy in real time.

Their best-positioned candidate folded to a loser who hasn't decided if she's running.

Their polling leader can't convince bettors she'd win a general election.

And the man who was supposed to be the fresh alternative is now on record saying he'll stand aside – on a fishing trip – before a single vote has been cast.
