Nancy Pelosi tore up Trump's State of the Union speech while standing behind him at the podium in 2020.
That was the moment Democrats decided their job wasn't to represent the American people – it was to perform hatred of Donald Trump on national television.
Tuesday night, they took it further.
Democrats Refused to Stand for Erika Kirk and Iryna Zarutska at the State of the Union
Erika Kirk sat in the gallery at the U.S. Capitol, a widow with young children, months removed from the murder of her husband Charlie.
Democrats sat on their hands.
President Trump honored Erika during his 108-minute address – the longest ever delivered to Congress.
He also introduced Anna Zarutska, the mother of Iryna Zarutska, the 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee stabbed to death by a career criminal on a Charlotte light rail train, a man who had been arrested over a dozen times and released through no-cash bail.
Democrats sat on their hands for that too.
When Trump asked every member of Congress to stand if they believed the government's first duty was to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens, Republicans erupted in a two-minute standing ovation.
Almost every Democrat stayed seated.
Trump looked at them and said exactly what millions of Americans were thinking: "You should be ashamed of yourself."
Fetterman Shook Trump's Hand and Blasted Democrats for Yelling and Screaming
Sen. John Fetterman was done.
The Pennsylvania Democrat stood for Erika Kirk, for Anna Zarutska, for the Venezuelan political prisoner freed and reunited with his niece during the speech, and for the veterans Trump recognized in the audience.
Then he went on Fox News the next morning and called out his own party.
"Can't we just be more kind to a widow?" Fetterman said on America's Newsroom. "It wasn't that long ago that a widow with young children had her husband murdered. How can we not just acknowledge that?"
He said he was disappointed that Democrats chose to "yell and scream" rather than observe basic decency in the chamber.
Fetterman also confirmed what cameras captured – he was the only Democrat who shook Trump's hand when the president entered the chamber. "Yes, I shook his hand, of course," he told Fox. "He walked in, and I'm always going to do that, for sure."
This Is What the Oath of Office Means to Them Now
Republican voter Ajua Mason said what every conservative watching at home was thinking.
Democrats "gave a middle finger to the oath of office that they took," Mason told Fox News' Will Cain on Wednesday. "Their new oath of office is oppose Trump on anything, on any situation."
She's right – and the numbers back her up.
Axios counted roughly half of all Senate and House Democrats who didn't even show up Tuesday night – about 20 Senate Democrats and just under 110 House members out of each chamber's full caucus. House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, the second-ranking Democrat in the House, skipped the speech entirely. "Rather than listen to Donald Trump lie to the American people, I will be hearing from the people of my district," Clark said.
More than two dozen skipped the speech to attend a MoveOn rally on the National Mall in 30-degree weather.
House Speaker Mike Johnson didn't mince words. "I think it's detestable that members would boycott the speech," Johnson said.
The Party That Forgot Why It Was Hired
Here's what separates Tuesday night from ordinary partisan theater.
Democrats didn't refuse to stand for Trump's policies – they refused to stand for a widow, for the mother of a murdered girl, for a man freed from a Venezuelan prison, for American veterans.
Those aren't political positions. They're human beings.
Fetterman understands this. His own colleagues either don't, or they do and simply don't care, because Hakeem Jeffries and Katherine Clark have made the calculation that their base won't tolerate basic decency toward anything connected to Trump.
That's the Democratic Party in 2026. Half of them flee the building rather than sit in the same room as the president. The ones who show up sit stone-faced for crime victims and grieving mothers. And the one member who behaves like a normal adult gets celebrated by conservatives and ignored by his own leadership.
Ajua Mason had it exactly right. The oath they took is gone. Chuck Schumer, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Katherine Clark – their only remaining loyalty is to stop Trump, on everything, always, no matter who gets hurt by the performance.
The American people are watching. November is coming.
