America handed its chip factories to Taiwan while China built its military.
But Elon Musk just answered that thirty-year surrender with one move.
And what Elon Musk announced this week in Texas has never been attempted anywhere on Earth – and it ends American dependence on a tiny island China intends to own.
The Building That Makes Everything Else Look Small
The numbers are almost too large to process.
Terafab will cover 100 million square feet in Grimes County, Texas.
The current world’s largest building – China’s New Century Global Center in Chengdu – clocks in at 18.9 million square feet.
Terafab will be more than five times larger.
The Pentagon, Apple Park, the Mall of America, and the entire Gigafactory Texas combined total roughly 25 million square feet.
Terafab beats all four of them put together – four times over.

SpaceX and Tesla confirmed this week that the first phase carries a price tag of $16.8 billion, with total investment potentially reaching $119 billion – one of the largest manufacturing commitments in American history.
Governor Greg Abbott announced a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant for SpaceX and called Terafab a “first-of-its-kind” facility that would accelerate semiconductor manufacturing and create thousands of jobs.
“Texas is where big ideas grow even bigger,” Abbott said.
He is not wrong.
Why Musk Said America Had No Choice
This is not a vanity project.
The combined chip demand from SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI already consumes a significant portion of all available global contract chipmaking capacity – and it still falls far short of what those companies actually need.
The problem is structural.
America once manufactured roughly 40% of the world’s semiconductors.
Today that number is around 10%.
The chips that run your phone, your car, your military’s guidance systems, and every AI model on the planet – the vast majority come from a tiny island called Taiwan, sitting 100 miles off the coast of a country that wants to own it.
Every general, every defense analyst, and every honest politician has known for decades that this was a catastrophic vulnerability.

Nobody fixed it.
Musk is fixing it.
What Terafab Actually Builds
Most chip factories do one thing.
They fabricate.
Then the chips get shipped somewhere else for memory integration.
Then shipped again for packaging.
Then again for testing.
Terafab eliminates all of that.
Logic, memory, advanced packaging, and testing – all under one roof, in one building, in Texas.
SpaceX is partnering with Intel, which brings advanced process manufacturing and 3D chip-stacking technology to the project.
The facility will produce chips for Tesla’s Optimus robots, self-driving Cybercabs, and high-power processors for SpaceX’s space-based data centers.
The goal is more than 1 terawatt of computing power per year – more than ten times the current capacity of all AI infrastructure worldwide.
Grimes County commissioners voted 4-1 to approve a 100% property tax abatement for the project.
Economists at Texas A&M project the investment could grow the county’s tax base by 500%.
County Judge Joe Fauth called it a “generational change.”
For a county whose entire current tax base is valued at around $11 billion, a project worth up to $119 billion is not a change.
It is a transformation.
Biden Gave a Speech at a Taiwanese Factory and Called It a Win
The left spent four years screaming about “reshoring” while doing nothing that actually reshored anything.
Biden flew to Arizona and gave a speech at a TSMC factory – a Taiwanese company’s factory – and declared “American manufacturing is back.”
That factory then delayed production twice because it could not find enough skilled American workers and had to fly in thousands of workers from Taiwan.
That is not winning.
This is winning – two American companies deciding the global chip supply chain is broken and building the solution themselves on American soil.
The U.S. government now holds an 8.4% equity stake in Intel, the Terafab partner bringing manufacturing expertise to the project.
Trump’s America First trade policies created the conditions that made this possible.
The tariff pressure that made domestic production economically competitive is the exact reason Terafab is going up in Texas.
The companies stated in their tax incentive applications that without Texas’s support, the project would have relocated to Arizona or another jurisdiction.
Texas won it.
Thirty years from now, when American-made chips power every robot, every satellite, and every AI system on the planet, people will remember it started on a former coal plant reservoir in Grimes County, Texas – because one man decided America was done losing.
