Cairo just got a strongly worded letter from the Trump State Department – along with another billion dollars.
The question nobody in Washington wants to answer is what happens if Egypt just ignores us.
Egypt Is Running a Persecution Machine on America's Dime
Said Mansour Rezk Abdelrazek converted from Islam to Christianity in 2016.
That one decision cost him everything.
Egyptian security forces arrested him in July 2025 after he tried to change the religion listed on his identity documents – the kind of bureaucratic request that takes ten minutes in America.
Egypt treated it like a national security emergency.
Prosecutors charged him with founding a terrorist organization, financing criminal activity, and contempt of Islam.

He has now sat in Cairo's 10th of Ramadan Prison for over a year, where advocates report he has been hung in a crucifixion position, denied adequate food, denied medical care, and allowed to meet with his attorney exactly once.
His trial – before Egypt's First Criminal Terrorism Circuit Court – has been postponed twice, most recently to September 6, 2026, after prosecutors failed to even appear at the June hearing.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees had already determined he needed international protection before Egypt arrested him anyway.
Over 35,000 people worldwide have signed petitions demanding his release.
This Is Not One Man's Story
This is the system working exactly as designed.
In January 2026, an Egyptian court sentenced Coptic Christian YouTuber Augustinos Samaan to five years in prison with hard labor – his crime was posting videos online that defended the Christian faith and pushed back against anti-Christian incitement.
That same month, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom called on the Trump administration to place Egypt on its Special Watch List for systematic violations of religious freedom.
On July 8, a Muslim mob stoned a church in Upper Egypt, injuring Christians and damaging the building.
Days later, attackers went after Father Matta Roushdy, 49, a Coptic Orthodox priest, in South Sinai.
Raymond Ibrahim – one of the country's leading experts on Christian persecution in the Muslim world – confirmed through the Gatestone Institute that Abdelrazek's lawyers have been denied access to his case file.

Egypt ranks 42nd on Open Doors' 2026 World Watch List of countries most hostile to Christians.
The State Department's own 2025 report found that of 27 appointed Egyptian governors, only one is Christian – despite Christians making up an estimated 10% of Egypt's 120 million people.
Zero Christians serve as president of any of Egypt's 27 public universities.
Two Christians – out of 31 cabinet ministers – represent the entire Coptic community in government.
This is the country collecting $1.3 billion from American taxpayers every single year.
Trump Said the Right Thing and Now He Needs to Use the Money
President Trump stated plainly: "America will always defend the right of every person to live out their faith openly, freely, and without fear."
That is exactly the right position.
But words alone have never moved Cairo.
Egyptian President El-Sisi makes a point of visiting the Coptic cathedral on Christmas every year – great optics, zero policy change.
Egyptian Middle East scholar Dalia Ziada told Fox News Digital that Coptic Christians are one of El-Sisi's most important political bases, yet his annual church visit is where his protection of them begins and ends.
Yes, Egypt is an ally – which is exactly why Cairo assumes the check will clear regardless of what happens to Coptic Christians.
The leverage exists and it is enormous.

Congress first tried to attach religious freedom conditions to Egypt's $1.3 billion in U.S. aid back in 2011 – after Egyptian military vehicles drove through crowds of Coptic protesters and soldiers opened fire, killing dozens.
Nothing changed, because the check kept clearing.
Egypt is not going to stop torturing Christian converts out of goodwill.
They will stop when American money comes with real conditions attached – and not before.
Said Abdelrazek's next court date is September 6.
He has been in a prison cell since July 2025 for the crime of believing in Jesus Christ.
If $1.3 billion in annual U.S. aid cannot move Egypt to release one man who converted to Christianity, then it is long past time to ask what exactly that money is buying.
