The experts were so confident.
Now they have to explain how every single one of them got it wrong.
Trump economic advisor Christopher Phelan just described what happened to 77 Bloomberg economists when the August jobs report landed – and it wasn't pretty.
The Number That Left 77 Economists With No Excuses
Bloomberg surveyed 77 economists before the August jobs report dropped.
Every one of them predicted the economy would add 55,000 jobs.
The actual number was 162,000 – three times higher.
Phelan didn't let the moment pass quietly.
"Not only was this jobs report three times higher than the Bloomberg median estimate, it was higher than every single one of them – it wasn't just higher than the average," Phelan said at Breitbart's State of the Economy event Tuesday.
Kevin Hassett, another Trump economic advisor, put a finer point on it.
"This number is four standard deviations above the average of their forecast," Hassett said. "This is one of the best numbers relative to expectations I've ever seen."
Four standard deviations.
For context, that's a statistical term for something that essentially should not happen.
The unemployment rate held at 4.1 percent – matching expectations – while the revised numbers for June and July added another 55,000 jobs to what was already reported.
How 77 Experts Built Models That Assumed Trump Would Fail
The 77 experts weren't just wrong – they were uniformly wrong.
That's the part worth understanding.
When a consensus of 77 economists all forecasts the same direction and the same approximate number, and the actual result lands so far outside that range it becomes a statistical anomaly – that isn't a miss.
That's a worldview failure.
Phelan made clear what's actually driving the numbers.
Manufacturing is roaring back – up 16,000 jobs in August alone.
Capital expenditures are on track to nearly double the 2024 figure.
Factory construction is up across the country.

And the Working Families Tax Cuts – signed by Trump on July 4, 2025 – are the engine behind it all.
The legislation let businesses write off factory construction, equipment, and R&D immediately and in full – and locked those rules in permanently rather than letting them expire.
According to the National Association of Manufacturers, the tax cuts are projected to generate $284 billion in new economic growth and preserve 1.1 million American manufacturing jobs.
Manufacturing GDP grew at a 12 percent rate in the quarter before Trump signed the bill into law.
That's not a coincidence.
The Experts Got It Wrong Because They Don't Understand What Trump Is Building
Phelan pointed to two decisions that made the difference: letting businesses immediately write off new investments, and bringing critical industries back to American soil.
"It is dangerous to have the U.S. in position to rely on other countries producing everything," Phelan said.
That's not an economic theory.
That's common sense – and it's exactly what the expert class spent years telling you was unsophisticated, naive, and opposed to the principles of free trade.
Meanwhile, Trump was right.
The same Bloomberg economists who built their models around the assumption that Trump's agenda wouldn't produce are now staring at a number four standard deviations outside their range.

Phelan described capital expenditures as "deferred consumption" – investments that don't just produce now but build the capacity to produce even more in the future.
"This economy isn't just producing a lot," Phelan said. "This economy is producing a lot in a way that will make us produce even more in the future."
That's the headline the mainstream media buried.
The structural investments Trump made – factories, equipment, reshoring – are now compounding.
The experts didn't just miss August.
They missed the entire architecture of what Trump built.
And every month that architecture keeps producing jobs, they'll have to explain why they got it wrong again.
