Iran's air force is gone, their navy is gone, and 30 mine-laying ships are sitting at the bottom of the Persian Gulf.
Now Trump just told the world he can end Iran's economy with a single word.
He's been sitting on that word – and what he does with it could determine whether Iran survives as a functioning country at all.
Trump's Warning Nobody in the Media Is Talking About
After meeting with the board of the Trump-Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Monday, Trump laid it out in plain English.
"We attacked Kharg Island and knocked it – literally destroyed everything on the island except for the area where the oil is," Trump said. "I call it the pipes. We left the pipes."
He left them on purpose.
Trump said the U.S. spared the oil infrastructure so whoever replaces this regime has something left to work with – but he made clear that calculation has an expiration date.
"We can do that on five minutes' notice. Just one simple word, and the pipes will be gone, too."
This is not rhetoric.
Kharg Island handles roughly 90% of Iran's crude oil exports, with a loading capacity of around 7 million barrels a day.
It is the single node through which Iran feeds its military, funds its proxies, and keeps its government alive.

Energy researcher Petras Katinas of the Royal United Services Institute called it "the main node" of the Iranian economy – and said without it, the country cannot function regardless of which regime is in power.
Trump didn't just threaten it. He already proved he could hit it.
A Crown Jewel Now in Ashes – Almost
On March 13, U.S. forces executed what Trump called "one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East" on Kharg Island.
U.S. Central Command confirmed more than 90 Iranian military targets were destroyed in a single precision strike – naval mine storage facilities, missile storage bunkers, air defenses, a naval base, airport facilities.
The oil infrastructure survived. For now.
That's not mercy. It's a leash.
Trump told Iran exactly what it means – keep blocking the Strait of Hormuz, and the leash comes off.
Since Operation Epic Fury launched February 28, Trump said ballistic missile attacks from Iran dropped 90% and drone strikes dropped 95%.
The U.S. destroyed more than 30 Iranian mine-laying vessels in recent days, gutting Tehran's ability to threaten commercial shipping.
Trump's summary was simple: "Iran is a paper tiger."
Then he added the part worth noting: "It wasn't a paper tiger two weeks ago."
Nobody Knows If Iran Even Has a Leader
Here's the detail that changes everything about where this war goes next.
Trump stood at the White House Monday and said this about Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei: "We don't know whether he is alive or dead. No one has seen him, and this is unusual."
He's right. It is unusual – and it's getting stranger by the day.

Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed Supreme Leader on March 8 after his father was killed in the opening strike of Operation Epic Fury on February 28.
Since then, he hasn't appeared on camera once.
He hasn't delivered a speech. He missed funerals of senior military commanders. His first "statement" as Supreme Leader was read by a news anchor on state television over a still photograph.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Khamenei "is wounded and likely disfigured."
Iranian officials insist Mojtaba is alive. But not one of them has produced a photo, video, or audio clip of the man.
The Telegraph obtained leaked audio from a senior Iranian protocol official describing how Mojtaba narrowly survived the February 28 strike – he had stepped into the yard of the Khamenei compound moments before missiles hit his residence.
His wife and son were killed instantly.
One Iranian official quoted by i24NEWS put it this way: "No one knows anything about Mojtaba, whether he is alive or dead or how badly injured. He has no control over the war because he is not here."
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps appears to be running military operations independently – making decisions for a supreme leader no one can confirm is alive to make them.
This is not a government issuing measured threats.
This is a regime hiding the condition of its own leader while pretending to run a war.
What This Actually Means
Trump has been thinking about Kharg Island for a very long time.
In a 1988 interview with The Guardian – when he was a real estate developer, not a politician – Trump said that if he were ever president, he'd be harsh on Iran.
"One bullet shot at one of our men or ships and I'd do a number on Kharg Island," he said.
Thirty-eight years later, he's already done a number on it. He just left the pipelines standing.
Now he's building a peacekeeping coalition to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.
France is in at an "8 out of 10," as Trump put it after a call with Macron on Sunday. Additional Marines are heading to the region.
The mullahs who thought they could bluff their way through this were wrong.
They threatened to reduce U.S.-linked oil facilities to "a pile of ashes" if Kharg's oil infrastructure was hit.
When Trump struck the island anyway – targeting only military assets – Iran couldn't answer in any meaningful way.
Iran's supreme leader may be on a ventilator in Moscow. Their air force is gone. Their navy is gone. Their mine fleet is at the bottom of the Gulf.
And the one man who spent 38 years waiting to say that word is sitting in the White House with his hand on the switch.
They should have taken the deal.
