The Ford Mustang stands alone as the last pony car survivor
After years of Biden’s war on American automotive greatness, the muscle car landscape looked pretty grim heading into 2025.
The Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro both got the axe, leaving Ford’s Mustang as the sole survivor of the original pony car trio.
But that doesn’t mean the Blue Oval is playing it safe.
The 2025 Ford Mustang lineup is packed with more power and performance than ever before.
The Mustang Dark Horse leads the charge with a modified 5.0-liter Coyote V8 that cranks out 500 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.¹

This isn’t your grandfather’s Mustang GT – it’s a track-focused monster that can hang with cars costing twice as much.
The Dark Horse comes with Magnetic Ride Control suspension, massive Brembo brakes, and Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires that’ll stick to the pavement like glue.
Motor Trend tested the Dark Horse and found it matched the acceleration of the previous-generation Shelby GT500 – hitting 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds.²
That’s supercar territory for a fraction of the price.
The Shelby GT500 is coming back with a vengeance
Speaking of Shelby, the legendary performance brand isn’t sitting this one out.
Spy photographers have caught prototypes of the 2026 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 testing around Ford’s Dearborn headquarters.³
The new GT500 is expected to pack a mystery engine code-named "Legend" that could deliver over 800 horsepower.
That would make it more powerful than the track-focused Mustang GTD, which targets 800+ horsepower with its supercharged 5.2-liter V8.
The GTD represents Ford’s most extreme street-legal Mustang ever, with carbon fiber everything and aerodynamics developed for the Nürburgring.
Ford is targeting a sub-seven-minute lap time at the famous German track – putting it in the same league as exotic supercars costing three times as much.
Cadillac’s CT5-V Blackwing is the last of the great American sedans
While everyone’s focused on two-door muscle cars, Cadillac is keeping the four-door performance sedan alive with the CT5-V Blackwing.
This beast packs a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that generates 668 horsepower and 659 lb-ft of torque.⁴
Even better, it’s the only sedan on the market that still offers a proper six-speed manual transmission.
The 2025 CT5-V Blackwing gets a new Precision Package that adds carbon-ceramic brakes, track-focused suspension, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires.
Motor Trend called it "one of the greatest all-around American performance cars of all time."⁵
With Cadillac going all-electric by the end of the decade, the Blackwing represents the last hurrah for gas-powered luxury performance.
The Corvette ZR1 is America’s new supercar king
But the real showstopper for 2025 is the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.
This mid-engine monster is the most powerful Corvette ever built, cranking out an insane 1,064 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8.⁶
That’s more power than the Dodge Challenger Demon 170, making it the most powerful V8 ever produced by an American manufacturer.
The ZR1 is capable of over 215 mph and should crack the quarter-mile in under 10 seconds.
Chevrolet benchmarked the Porsche 911 GT2 RS and Ferrari SF90 while developing the ZR1, and the results speak for themselves.
The ZTK Performance Package adds over 1,200 pounds of downforce and track-focused aerodynamics that would make a Formula 1 car jealous.⁷
The last of the gas-powered Camaros are collector’s items
While production of the Camaro ended in 2024, a few brand-new examples are still sitting on dealer lots.
The final Camaro ever built was a Summit White 2024 ZL1 with a six-speed manual – a fitting send-off for the legendary nameplate.⁸
The ZL1 packs a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 making 650 horsepower, and these final examples are already becoming collector’s items.
Only 14 brand-new 2024 Camaros remain at dealerships nationwide, including just two ZL1 models.⁹
One ZL1 Collector’s Edition was priced at nearly $95,000, but for muscle car enthusiasts, it’s a chance to own a piece of automotive history. Now they’re going at auction for nearly double.
