Stella Parton loved her big sister for 80 years.
Now she's telling America about Dolly’s final days.
And Dolly Parton asked her sister for one thing before she died – but it wasn't what anyone expected.
The Last Request
Prayer.
That was it.
The greatest entertainer country music ever produced – a woman who built an empire, funded a COVID vaccine, and put books in the hands of hundreds of millions of children – wanted her little sister to pray for her.
"That's the last thing Dolly asked me for, was prayer," Stella said.
Not a phone call to her manager.
Not a press release.
Not a cure.
Prayer.
Dolly Parton died August 25 at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville.
She was 80 years old.
She kept her cancer diagnosis secret from nearly everyone – even family members.
Her publicist confirmed she had been "bravely facing a brief battle with cancer," but the specific type has never been disclosed and Stella says it won't be.
"It's not my business to tell her business," Stella said.
A Secret She Carried Alone
Dolly had been warning people something was wrong for over a year.
In September 2025, she postponed her Las Vegas residency, telling fans she needed "a few procedures."
Her immune system, her digestive system – all of it had gone sideways.
Her own explanation for why was heartbreaking.
"I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn't pay attention to when I was watching over Carl," Dolly said in her final People interview, four days before she died.
Carl Dean – her husband of nearly six decades – died March 3, 2025, at age 82.
Dolly had spent years caring for him, reportedly as his health deteriorated in private.

She told fans at Dollywood she had gotten "worn down and worn out" from grief.
She put Carl first.
And she paid for it.
Stella believes it directly.
"I think she worked too hard and didn't maybe take as good a care of herself as she should have," Stella said. "She, at one point, she said, 'You know, I spent a lot of time caring for Carl that maybe I neglected myself.'"
She Knew Where She Was Going
Stella wants you to know one more thing.
Dolly wasn't afraid.
"She knew where she was going," Stella said. "She wasn't going anywhere bad. She was going to be with mom and daddy. She was prepared. Yeah, she was definitely prepared."
A woman who grew up in a Smoky Mountain hollow with eleven siblings, whose grandfather was a church minister who anointed the sick with olive oil and prayed over them.
A woman who once said she trusted God so completely that even if there were no God, she would still choose to believe – because faith takes the weight of the world off your shoulders.
That woman faced death the same way she faced everything else.
Head on. At peace. Sparkled up.

Stella's parting image says everything: Dolly slept in her makeup when she spent the night with family.
Even at the end, Dolly was Dolly.
The last person to see her without the wig and the glamour was Stella, who said with a laugh, "I knew what she looked like. She looked like me without her makeup."
And the last thing she asked Stella for was prayer.
That tells you everything you need to know about who she was.
