Dan Rivera, the 54-year-old Senior Lead Investigator for the New England Society for Psychic Research, was discovered dead in his Gettysburg, Pennsylvania hotel room on Sunday, July 13, 2025.¹
Rivera had just finished what would become his final day touring with the allegedly possessed Annabelle doll as part of the "Devils on the Run Tour."
The timing couldn’t have been more unsettling. Rivera was found dead just hours after spending the day presenting the notorious Raggedy Ann doll to sold-out crowds at the historic Soldiers Orphanage Homestead.
Hotel workers discovered Rivera’s body when they entered his room. Emergency responders were called to the scene around 8:00 p.m., but it was too late.²
Pennsylvania State Police released a report stating that "nothing unusual or suspicious was observed at the scene," but the circumstances surrounding his death have left the paranormal community asking serious questions.³
Adams County Chief Deputy Coroner Scott Pennewill confirmed Rivera’s death wasn’t suspicious, telling reporters, "His death was nothing suspicious. The coroner’s office and the state police were called to the scene on Sunday night."⁴
But here’s where things get eerie: According to TMZ, Rivera was feeling ill just hours before he was found dead. The outlet reported that Rivera told his coworkers he was sick and needed to go back to his room to rest.⁵

The Annabelle doll was not present in Rivera’s hotel room when his body was discovered. Coroner Pennewill confirmed that Rivera was found alone, and the doll was likely secured in a tour vehicle in the hotel parking lot.⁶
For those familiar with the dark history surrounding Annabelle, this detail raises serious questions. The Warrens always warned that the doll should never be moved carelessly, and that she becomes more active when disturbed from her usual resting place.
Rivera had spent over ten years working closely with Lorraine Warren before her death in 2019. He was one of the few people Warren trusted to handle the doll and understood the alleged dangers better than anyone.
According to the New England Society for Psychic Research, Rivera "worked closely with Lorraine Warren and remained by her side even as her health declined, always offering a steady hand and unwavering support."⁷
The investigation is far from over. Rivera underwent an autopsy, but results won’t be available for 60 to 90 days. That means the paranormal community will be left wondering what really happened to their beloved colleague for months.
The cursed doll’s deadly tour across America
The "Devils on the Run Tour" has been drawing massive crowds since it launched in early May 2025. The tour brings the infamous Annabelle doll – normally locked away behind glass at the Warren Occult Museum in Connecticut – to paranormal enthusiasts across the country.
Rivera was instrumental in organizing and executing these tours, which have been selling out in every city. The Gettysburg leg alone sold over 1,260 tickets across three days, with crowds desperate to see the doll that inspired The Conjuring movie franchise.⁸
But some in the paranormal community have expressed concerns about removing Annabelle from her secured case. Catholic demonologist warned earlier this year, "You don’t treat something like Annabelle as a novelty."⁹
The tour was supposed to continue through Illinois, Kentucky, and other states before wrapping up in Maine this September. Now, Rivera’s sudden death has cast a dark shadow over the entire operation.
Tony Spera, NESPR founder and Lorraine Warren’s son-in-law, has insisted that the tour will continue despite the tragedy. In a statement, NESPR said, "We believe with all our hearts that Dan would have wanted the work to continue."¹⁰
But critics are asking whether anyone should be touring with such a dangerous artifact.
Army veteran devoted his life to the paranormal

Earlier this year, Rivera even had to publicly debunk rumors that Annabelle had gone missing from the museum, posting a TikTok video from inside the Warren Occult Museum to prove the doll was safely secured.
"Annabelle’s not missing, she’s not in Chicago, alright?" Rivera said in the video. "She never was in Chicago and she’s not missing because she’s right behind me."¹²

Rivera’s death represents a massive loss for the paranormal investigation community. He was one of the few people with direct experience handling the Warren’s most dangerous artifacts.
His family described him as "the center of this family and a pillar of love and strength" and "a devoted husband, father of four sons, and a staunchly faithful friend."¹³
