FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino announced Wednesday he's returning to conservative media in January after completing his mission to expose the rot inside America's premier law enforcement agency.
"I will be leaving my position with the FBI in January," Bongino wrote on X. "I want to thank President Trump, AG Bondi, and Director Patel for the opportunity to serve with purpose. Most importantly, I want to thank you, my fellow Americans, for the privilege to serve you."¹
President Trump praised Bongino's service when reporters asked about his departure at Joint Base Andrews.
"Dan did a great job. I think he wants to go back to his show," Trump said.²
FBI Director Kash Patel said Bongino was "the best partner I could've asked for in helping restore this FBI" and that Bongino "not only completed his mission — he far exceeded it."³
The former Secret Service agent who protected Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama walked away from one of the most lucrative careers in conservative media to answer Trump's call.
Bongino owned 16 million shares of Rumble worth roughly $160 million and earned $7 million annually from Fox News before leaving in 2023, plus another $4.9 million from his radio show that replaced Rush Limbaugh's legendary time slot.⁴
Trump needed an outsider who understood how the deep state operates – and what Bongino learned during his 10 months inside the FBI proved every suspicion about Washington, D.C. corruption.
Career Bureaucrats Sabotaged Reform At Every Turn
The problems started immediately when career FBI agents realized Bongino actually planned to drain the swamp.
Bongino was the first FBI Deputy Director in modern history with no FBI experience – and the bureau's entrenched bureaucrats made him pay for it every single day.⁵
The FBI Agents Association representing 14,000 agents opposed his appointment from day one because they knew Bongino wouldn't protect their corrupt system.⁶
Anonymous leaks to the media attacked him constantly while career agents who resented an outsider undermined every reform attempt.
But Bongino delivered results they couldn't ignore.
He helped crack the January 6 pipe bomb case that career FBI agents let go cold for nearly five years.
"This case languished. It sat there for four years, collecting dust. No one did anything to solve this," Attorney General Pam Bondi said about the investigation before Bongino arrived.⁷
Authorities arrested Brian Cole Jr. in December and charged him with planting the bombs outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters.⁸
Bondi credited Bongino directly, saying he told everyone "I'm going to solve this case" and "put a new team on it."⁹
Bongino also got access to the complete Epstein files – and what he found changed everything.
"I have reviewed the case. Jeffrey Epstein killed himself. There's no evidence in the case file indicating otherwise," Bongino wrote after examining all the evidence.¹⁰

The breaking point came in July when Bongino and FBI Director Kash Patel pushed to release more Epstein documents.

But Justice Department leadership blocked the release and issued a memo declaring the case closed.¹¹
Sources said Bongino confronted Attorney General Pam Bondi directly about burying the files and didn't return to work for at least one day as he decided whether to continue.¹²
Trump responded by appointing Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey as "co-deputy director" in August.¹³
But Bongino had seen enough.
The career bureaucrats, the leakers, the obstruction – it proved the FBI can't be reformed from within because the people running it have zero interest in reform.
