Hillary Clinton called you "deplorable" in 2016 and lost the presidency.
Democrats learned nothing.
Now the man who wants to be the next Senate Minority Leader just told a room full of supporters what he really thinks about the 77 million Americans who voted against him.
What Murphy Actually Said
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) was on his book tour last week at Judson Memorial Church in New York City when he let the mask slip completely.
"There are lots of Trump voters who don't know much about the facts," Murphy told the crowd.
A woman sitting next to him jumped in – "Not if they watch Fox News" – and rather than pump the brakes, Murphy agreed and doubled down.
He said there are sources "even further rigged than Fox News, more in the tank for Trump."
"So, I think part of it is that there's a big element of his base who just isn't hearing the real story," Murphy added.

Seventy-seven million Americans – truck drivers, nurses, small business owners, veterans, farmers – went to the polls, weighed their options, and voted for Donald Trump.
Chris Murphy's explanation is that they simply don't know enough.
They didn't make a choice.
They were fooled.
The Pattern Murphy Can't Quit
This wasn't a slip of the tongue.
It's a habit.
Just weeks ago, Murphy appeared on The View and called the MAGA movement "a divisive, hateful community."
In the same breath, he acknowledged that Trump "has done a much better job than Democrats of speaking directly to the American people" – then turned right around and explained that Trump's supporters are stuck in a "sick" America where communities have been hollowed out.
The through-line is unmistakable: Murphy believes Trump voters aren't making a rational political choice.

They're either hateful or victims of misinformation or trapped in a broken community that made them vulnerable to manipulation.
The one explanation that never enters his mind is that 77 million people looked at Democrat governance – open borders, inflation, reckless spending, crime – and made a perfectly rational decision to vote for someone who promised to stop it.
He's standing at the edge of that answer, and he cannot bring himself to look down.
This Is Why Democrats Are at 26 Percent
A recent Times/Siena survey found just 26 percent of voters feel satisfied with the Democrat Party.
Twenty-six percent.
Murphy knows this. He's been on a book tour partly to explain it.
And yet his diagnosis – Trump voters are uninformed rubes who watch the wrong news sources – is exactly the reason that number stays low.
You cannot rebuild a coalition by telling half the country they aren't smart enough to have voted correctly.
Voters remember being talked down to.
They remember 2016, when Clinton put them in a "basket of deplorables." They remember Barack Obama explaining in 2008 that struggling Americans "cling to guns or religion" because they're bitter. Murphy is now adding his chapter to that same playbook – and he's somehow surprised it isn't working.
The Democrat Party doesn't have a messaging problem.
They have a contempt problem.
The Man Who Wants to Lead the Resistance
Murphy isn't just a backbench critic.
He's positioned himself as the future of the Democrat Party – on the shortlist to replace Chuck Schumer as Senate Minority Leader, running a PAC called American Mobilization, flooding social media, and now touring the country selling a book.
Earlier this year, he traveled overseas to the Global Progressive Mobilisation conference and told the crowd that America faced "the most significant threat to American democracy since the Civil War."
He called Trump's presidency a totalitarian takeover – to a foreign audience – while the 77 million Americans he just called uninformed were back home living their lives.
That's who Chris Murphy is running to lead Democrats against.
Here's what he still doesn't understand: those voters made a clear judgment in November 2024.
The answer isn't to call them ignorant.
The answer is to figure out why they stopped listening – and Murphy refuses to ask the question.
He's going to lose that argument again.
