Braden Markus was dead 30 minutes after a stranger posing as a teenage girl convinced him to send one photo.
Now the man who spent two decades catching predators on television is telling parents they have one job before their kid touches a screen.
But most of them are waiting too long to do it.

Chris Hansen didn't mince words on Sean Hannity's podcast this week.
"Don't talk to anybody online who you don't know in real life," he said. "Start there."
Hansen – the longtime To Catch a Predator host who spent 20 years documenting how predators operate – laid out exactly how the trap works.

"They get caught up in the moment because kids' identity is so tightly tied to their social media presence," Hansen said.
Then comes the threat – pay up, or the images go to every person your son knows.
"They can't live with the thought of this getting out there or them being embarrassed, and they end up taking their own lives."
He's not exaggerating.
The Numbers Are Staggering
The FBI is not treating this as a fringe problem.
From October 2021 to March 2023 alone, the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations received over 13,000 reports of financial sextortion targeting minors – 12,600 victims, primarily boys, and at least 20 confirmed suicides.
That was three years ago.
By the first half of 2025, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was logging 23,593 sextortion reports – up from 13,842 in the first six months of 2024.
Cases nearly doubled in one year.

Ninety percent of financial sextortion victims are male, between the ages of 14 and 17.
The predators behind these schemes are not lone actors – they are professional criminal operations running out of Nigeria and West Africa, targeting American boys the way other criminal enterprises target financial institutions.
The FBI conducted a multinational takedown called Operation Artemis specifically to break these networks, pulling 22 Nigerian suspects into custody across an international strike.
They are still operating.
Trump and Hawley Just Answered Hansen's Call
The conversation Hansen is having isn't happening in a vacuum.
One month ago, President Trump signed the Secure America Act into law – including a $108.5 million provision authored by Sen. Josh Hawley to hire 200 new child exploitation investigators and forensic analysts at the Department of Homeland Security.
Before that bill, DHS had exactly seven full-time specialists dedicated to identifying child exploitation victims nationwide.
Seven investigators for a crime affecting tens of thousands of American children every year.
"This is the largest surge against child trafficking ever by the federal government," Hawley said after the signing.
Hawley's office has documented that 89,000 unidentified child victims currently appear in international abuse image databases – children who have been found in these materials but not yet located by law enforcement, in part because there weren't enough investigators to find them.

Every Senate Democrat voted against the bill.
What Hansen Is Really Saying
Hansen told Hannity that parents need to have this conversation "at the very moment" their child has access to the internet.
Not after.
Not when they're older.
The moment the device is in their hands.
He gave parents the exact words: "There are adults online who like to trick kids. You don't wanna be tricked."
That's not a complicated message – it's the simplest possible warning delivered in the simplest possible way.
What Hansen understands, and what too many parents miss, is that these predators have studied how teenagers talk, what they respond to, and exactly how to manufacture trust in hours.
One 13-year-old boy in Pennsylvania joined Instagram and was dead two days later.
The conversation Hansen is urging parents to have takes ten minutes.
