The restaurant industry is locked in an all-out war for customers this December.

Fast food chains are burning through cash trying to lure Americans back through their doors.

And Chipotle just announced one deal that has Burger King scrambling.

Chipotle turns sweaters into currency this Saturday

Chipotle dropped the details on its final December promotion that's got the entire fast food industry sitting up and taking notice.

This Saturday, December 20, Chipotle locations across the country will give customers buy-one-get-one-free entrées from 4 p.m. until closing time.¹

But there's a catch that separates this from every other boring promotion flooding the market right now.

You have to wear a "festive or over-the-top sweater" to score the deal.¹

Chipotle calls it "Extra Sweater Day" and it's the grand finale of their three-week "Unwrap Extra" promotion that's been packing their locations every Saturday since December 6.¹

Restaurant staff get to decide whether your sweater qualifies as sufficiently "extra" to earn the freebie.¹

That's right — seventeen-year-old cashiers now hold the power to judge your holiday fashion choices and determine whether you deserve discounted burritos.

The promotion caps off at five free entrées per transaction and doesn't work for delivery, mobile orders, or kids' meals.¹

Burger King tried fighting back with its own "13 Days of Deals" running December 12-24, offering daily freebies with $5 purchases.²

McDonald's rolled out $2 items for 12 days straight through its app.²

Shake Shack promised free premium burgers all month with $10 purchases.²

But none of them thought to make customers dress up like holiday catalog models to get their food.

Restaurant chains burn cash in desperate December blitz

The entire restaurant industry is locked in an unprecedented promotion war as inflation-battered Americans cut back on dining out.

Chipotle ran buy-one-get-one deals on the first three Saturdays of December starting at 4 p.m., each requiring different purchases.¹

December 6 required buying a three-taco entrée. December 13 required a burrito purchase. And Saturday's sweater stunt works with any entrée.¹

Rewards members are also getting "surprise drops" of free guacamole, double protein, chips, or drinks dumped directly into their app wallets throughout the month.¹

Chris Brandt, Chipotle's President and Chief Brand Officer, admitted this represents the chain's "biggest holiday promotion yet."¹

Translation: They're hemorrhaging traffic and throwing money at the problem.

Burger King's 13-day blitz includes free cheeseburgers, Whoppers, Croissan'wiches, and cookies — all requiring just a $5 purchase.²

That's basically paying customers to show up.

Shake Shack's rotating weekly freebies started with Big Shacks, moved to SmokeShacks, then Chicken Shacks, and finish the month with free ShackBurgers.²

Every single one requires a $10 purchase and the promo code "SHACKCHEER."²

McDonald's $2 deals through December 23 hit everything from McCrispy sandwiches to hash browns to breakfast biscuits.²

Sonic threw 99-cent corn dogs and $1.49 mozzarella sticks into the mix.²

Restaurants don't burn cash like this when business is booming.

These chains are competing for a shrinking pool of customers who've figured out cooking at home costs half as much as drive-through windows.

Chipotle's sweater gimmick is just the latest attempt to manufacture viral social media moments that might drive traffic.

The chain partnered with No Kid Hungry for December, letting app users round up purchases to donate toward fighting childhood hunger.¹

They've raised over $825,000 for the cause since early 2024.¹

That's a nice PR move wrapped around promotions designed to stop the bleeding from declining customer visits.

Saturday's sweater deal will pack Chipotle locations from 4 p.m. until close as customers desperate for value deals compete to prove their holiday attire qualifies as "extra" enough.

Whether wearing an ugly Christmas sweater to save $10 on burritos represents savvy budgeting or rock bottom for American dining culture is a question each customer will have to answer for themselves.
