Fast food giants thought they had the holiday drink market figured out.

They were dead wrong.

And Chick-fil-A just made one move that has McDonald's and Starbucks scrambling.

The holiday treat that's been driving Americans crazy for 17 years just returned

Remember when getting a holiday drink meant waiting in line at Starbucks for 20 minutes while some barista butchered your name on a cup?

Those days are over for millions of Americans who discovered something better.

Chick-fil-A brought back its legendary Peppermint Chip Milkshake on November 10, and the competition is watching nervously as customers line up at restaurants that aren't even open on Sundays.

The pink-hued shake combines hand-spun Icedream dessert with peppermint bark chips and gets topped with whipped cream and a cherry.¹

Fans have been begging for its return on social media for months, with one declaring "it's almost time for chick fil a peppermint milkshake season."²

This isn't some trendy new item that'll disappear in a few weeks.

Chick-fil-A first introduced the Peppermint Chip Milkshake back in 2008, and it's become such a powerhouse that more were ordered last holiday season than any previous year.³

The chain also rolled out two coffee options – the Peppermint Chip Frosted Coffee and Peppermint Iced Coffee – giving customers minty options from morning coffee runs to late-night dessert cravings.

But here's what has McDonald's and Starbucks really sweating.

Chick-fil-A doesn't just beat the competition – it humiliates them

McDonald's franchisees surveyed by analyst Mark Kalinowski named Chick-fil-A as their biggest competitive threat, with 89% calling the chicken chain their top rival.⁴

Not Burger King. Not Wendy's. Not any other burger chain.

Chick-fil-A.

And when you look at the numbers, it's easy to see why the Golden Arches should be terrified.

The average Chick-fil-A location generated $7.5 million in sales in 2024 – the highest among major U.S. fast-food chains.⁵

Compare that to McDonald's locations, which averaged $2.67 million per unit.⁶

Let that sink in. Chick-fil-A restaurants make nearly three times as much per location despite being closed every Sunday.

Starbucks isn't faring any better, with comparable store sales declining 2% in the third quarter of 2025.⁷

Meanwhile, Chick-fil-A earned a customer satisfaction score of 83 in 2025, maintaining its position as the #1 quick-service restaurant for the 11th consecutive year.⁸

McDonald's tried launching CosMc's, a beverage-focused concept designed to compete with chains like Starbucks and grab some of that drink market share.

It shuttered after less than two years.⁹

Starbucks keeps pushing seasonal Refreshers and celebrity partnerships trying to capture Gen Z customers.

But when the Peppermint Chip Milkshake drops, none of that matters.

What Chick-fil-A understands that its competitors don't

Fans aren't just buying a milkshake – they're buying into a holiday tradition that's been around for nearly two decades.

Some customers even created viral menu hacks, like adding Oreo cookie crumbles to the Peppermint Chip Milkshake for about 40 cents extra.¹⁰

You don't see that kind of organic engagement at McDonald's or Starbucks.

The chain isn't stopping at beverages either.

Chick-fil-A launched a holiday merchandise collection featuring matching family crewnecks, wearable blankets, sauce gift sets, and holiday plush cows.¹¹

They even debuted Season Two of their animated series "Legends of Evergreen Hills" on their free Play App, giving families holiday entertainment alongside their peppermint treats.

"At Chick-fil-A, we want to help guests slow down, come together and enjoy great food with even more ways to connect amid the holiday hustle," said Khalilah Cooper, vice president of brand strategy, advertising and media at Chick-fil-A.¹²

That's the language of a company that understands its customers actually want to spend time with their families during the holidays instead of standing in overcrowded coffee shops or dealing with broken ice cream machines.

McDonald's keeps trying to copy whatever's trendy.

Starbucks keeps pushing overpriced drinks with unpronounceable names.

Chick-fil-A just keeps doing what works – delivering quality food with outstanding service while staying closed on Sundays so employees can spend time with their families.

And now the Peppermint Chip Milkshake is back through January 3, 2026, reminding everyone why Chick-fil-A dominates this industry despite having a fraction of the locations of its competitors.¹³

The beverage wars just heated up for the holiday season.

But looking at the track record, McDonald's and Starbucks should already know how this ends.
