Comedy legends rarely admit their mistakes.
But Chevy Chase just broke that rule in spectacular fashion.
And Chevy Chase just admitted one big regret that left Hollywood stunned.
The career decision that's haunted Chase for decades
Chevy Chase became the face of Saturday Night Live during its first season in 1975.
He created the iconic "Weekend Update" segment that remains a staple of the show nearly 50 years later.
Now 82 years old, Chase won two Emmy Awards as both a performer and writer during his brief SNL tenure.
He finally admitted in the trailer for his new CNN documentary I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not what everyone suspected all along.
"It was a mistake to leave SNL," Chase revealed.¹
But in October 1976, at the absolute peak of his fame, Chase walked away from the show that made him a star.
He left for a woman – his girlfriend at the time, Jacqueline Carlin, who refused to move to New York.
The relationship lasted only a couple of years after Chase abandoned the show that made him famous.
Chase told Morning Joe in February 2025 that he "left because I was stricken with a girl from L.A. that I met, and in fact married, but for only a couple of years."³
Bill Murray replaced Chase in Season 2, and the two clashed violently when Chase returned to host in 1978.
Murray told Chase during rehearsals that everyone hated him, leading to a legendary fistfight in John Belushi's dressing room.
Chase went on to star in comedy classics like Caddyshack (1980), National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), Fletch (1985), and Three Amigos (1986).
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) became a holiday staple that families still watch every year.
But the price Chase paid for Hollywood stardom was steep.
His relationship with his SNL castmates never fully recovered.
Dan Aykroyd, Goldie Hawn, and Martin Short all appear in the documentary sharing their memories of working with Chase.
"Chevy has a deep heart, and that's the other part of the wild man," Hawn said in the trailer.⁴
Beverly D'Angelo, who played Chase's wife in all five Vacation films, added: "The thing about fame is that everything around you changes."⁵
The behavior that destroyed his reputation
Chase's ego and difficult behavior followed him throughout his career.
The most damaging episode came during his time on the NBC sitcom Community from 2009 to 2013.
Chase played Pierce Hawthorne, the oldest member of a community college study group.
But behind the scenes, Chase made the set a nightmare for cast and crew.
He used a racial slur toward co-star Donald Glover during filming in 2013.
Yvette Nicole Brown walked off set and declared "I am not coming back until that man is off the show," according to a former extra on the series.⁶
Chase was escorted off the lot that same day and fired from the show.
Joel McHale, who starred opposite Chase on Community, said in 2024 that "the feeling is mutual" about Chase's attitude.
"This was not a prison sentence. We were not conscripted into a war," McHale said on the Inside of You podcast. "You were being paid a lot of money and getting free food all day long, so you could just walk away."⁷
The physical confrontations between McHale and Chase got so bad that McHale dislocated Chase's shoulder during one incident.
Chase later dismissed Community by saying it "wasn't funny enough for me."⁸
Community creator Dan Harmon had his own brutal feud with Chase, leading to Harmon being fired after Season 3.
Harmon led the cast and crew in chanting "F— you Chevy!" during the Season 3 wrap party while Chase's wife and daughter watched.
Chase is now legally barred from appearing in the upcoming Community movie according to Harmon.
The documentary pulls no punches
I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not promises an unflinching look at one of comedy's most polarizing figures.
The trailer describes Chase as "a complicated comedy legend" who admits he's difficult to figure out.
One woman asks Chase offscreen: "I'm just trying to figure you out."
Chase replies: "It's not going to be easy for you."⁹
Despite decades of controversy and burned bridges, Chase maintains he's satisfied with his life.
"I don't think a lot of people have the happiness I have," Chase stated in the documentary. "I am who I am, and I like who I am."¹⁰
The film features extensive interviews with Chase, Michaels, Aykroyd, Hawn, Short, and others who worked with the comedy legend over his 50-year career.
But the central question remains unanswered: was leaving SNL truly the mistake that derailed what could have been an even greater career?
Chase walked away from television immortality at age 32 for Hollywood fame and fortune.
He got both – but lost the respect of his peers and the magic of being part of television history's most influential comedy show.
The man who told America "I'm Chevy Chase and you're not" spent the rest of his career proving he was right.
Nobody could be Chevy Chase – not even Chevy Chase himself.
