Bill Maher went on live television Friday and told his own side the truth.
Nobody on the left wanted to hear it.
And now six musicians who refused to celebrate America's 250th birthday have handed Trump the biggest political gift of the summer – and Bill Maher is the one explaining why.
The Walkout That Handed Trump Everything He Needed
When organizers announced the Freedom 250 concert lineup on May 27, nine acts were booked to perform at the Great American State Fair on the National Mall – a 16-day celebration running June 25 through July 10.
Within days, six of them were gone.
Martina McBride walked first, posting on Instagram that she had been presented with a "nonpartisan event" that turned out to be "misleading."
Bret Michaels followed with the same complaint.
Then came The Commodores, Morris Day and the Time, Young MC, and C+C Music Factory – all citing concerns about the event's ties to President Trump.

Six of nine acts, gone.
What they left behind was a pure MAGA stage – and Maher said the quiet part out loud about what that actually means for Democrats.
"It looks like you are just what people say about you," Maher told his Real Time panel Friday. "You don't really love America. It looks like you think Trump is more important than the country itself."
He wasn't done.
"Now it's just a big MAGA rally, this whole thing," he said. "Now it's Trump and Lee Greenwood. Wouldn't it have been better to play this gig? Can't we all just celebrate America itself and leave Trump out of it?"
Democrats Have a Patriotism Problem and They Know It
This isn't a new story. It's a pattern.
Gallup data from 2025 showed that only around one-third of Democrats identify as "extremely" or "very" patriotic – compared to nearly 90 percent of Republicans. In 2001, both parties were essentially tied at around 87-90 percent.
That collapse didn't happen by accident.
Democrats boycotted Trump's first inauguration.
They boycotted the State of the Union.
They organized protests on the Fourth of July. Now they're boycotting America's 250th birthday party.
At some point, the pattern becomes the message.

The American Enterprise Institute noted that for a significant portion of the progressive base, patriotism has become, in their own words, "uncool" – and increasingly hard to square with an ideology that frames America's founding as a story of oppression rather than freedom.
Fox News polling confirmed what anyone paying attention already knew: 85 percent of Republicans say they're proud of the United States today. Only 36 percent of Democrats say the same.
Trump responded to the walkouts exactly the way you'd expect a man holding a winning hand to respond.
"We don't want singers with no talent, but big fees to put you to sleep, we've told them all to stay home," he wrote on Truth Social.
He replaced the concert with what he called the "Greatest Rally, EVER" – Lee Greenwood opening with God Bless the U.S.A., tenor Christopher Macchio performing, the U.S. Army Band, the Armed Forces Choir, and the United States Marine Band.
The artists who walked out didn't stop a Trump event.
They built one.
The Moment a Democratic Senator Sat Silent and Said Everything
The most damaging part of Friday night wasn't that Maher criticized the walkouts.
It was who was sitting at the table when he did it.
Democrat Senator Chris Murphy – the same Chris Murphy who marched Democrats out of the State of the Union earlier this year – sat there while a liberal HBO host told him his own party doesn't love America.
Murphy's response?
He started talking about a DC race his kids were excited about.

Bill Maher just told a sitting Democrat senator that his party looks unpatriotic on national television – and the senator changed the subject to his children's weekend plans.
That's not a rebuttal.
That's a concession.
Bret Michaels was going to be on that stage. The Commodores. Martina McBride.
Artists you grew up with, standing on the National Mall for America's 250th birthday.
They walked out. Because of Trump.
Trump didn't have to say a word.
He let them go, told them to stay home, and replaced them with Lee Greenwood, the Armed Forces Choir, and the United States Marine Band.
Now ask yourself: which side of that picture looks like it loves America?
America turns 250 years old this summer.
The party that can't show up for that has already given you their answer.
