The Left spent years telling you that Donald Trump's words caused January 6th.
Now their own most famous comedian just went on HBO and said it out loud – the left's violent rhetoric made someone want to assassinate the president.
And that’s something they can't put back in the bottle.
What Maher Actually Said
On Friday's Real Time, Maher didn't hedge.
He didn't say "both sides have concerns."
He said if Democrats genuinely believe Trump is "Hitler McPedophile" – their actual framing, their actual language – then "you kind of have to kill him."
"That's the mentality they have," Maher said.
He connected it directly to the same argument Democrats made for years about conservative rhetoric.
"I remember when the shoe was on the other foot," Maher told his audience. "The liberals used to always say – and they were right to say it – that a lot of this very violent rhetoric we hear inspires the borderline personality to then do something."

He was talking about themselves.
"Hitler McPedophile" – Their Words, Not His
Stop and sit with that phrase for a second.
"Hitler McPedophile."
That is not a fringe slur invented by some anonymous Twitter account.
That is the operating premise of MSNBC prime time, of late-night television, of every Democrat fundraising email that has landed in your inbox since 2016.
Joe Scarborough spent four years comparing Trump to Hitler on a show NBC paid him to host.
Robert De Niro stood at a Broadway awards ceremony and screamed a four-letter word about Trump into a live microphone – and the audience gave him a standing ovation.
Jimmy Kimmel spent years making jokes about Trump dying that were so bad Melania Trump publicly called on ABC to take a stand against what she described as "hateful and violent rhetoric."
That is the specific language Maher was describing.

And his point – delivered on his own liberal platform to his own liberal audience – was that once you genuinely convince someone that the president is history's greatest monster, you have also convinced them that killing him is not only justified but necessary.
This Has Already Happened
This isn't a theoretical warning.
In June 2017, James Hodgkinson drove to a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, and opened fire on Republican congressmen.
Hodgkinson had spent months consuming left-wing media.
His Facebook page was a catalog of Democratic talking points – Trump was a traitor, Republicans were destroying America, the resistance had to fight back.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot and nearly died.
The left spent approximately 72 hours expressing concern before returning to the same rhetoric that produced the shooter.
Three Trump assassination attempts followed across 2024 and into this administration.
After the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting in April 2026, a daycare worker in Ohio posted a TikTok lamenting that the gunman missed.

She was working with children the next morning.
The Left Can't Unring This Bell
Maher is not a conservative.
He is a liberal who has defended abortion, attacked Republicans, and spent years on the same side of the culture war as the people he's now calling out.
When Tucker said it, Democrats dismissed it as partisan spin.
When Maher says it on HBO – on the show leftists cite as their intellectual home base – there is no partisan deflection available.
Chuck Schumer stood on the steps of the Supreme Court in 2020 and told Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh they had "released the whirlwind" and would "pay the price."
Two years later, an armed man showed up at Kavanaugh's home.
Maxine Waters told supporters to confront Trump officials "in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station" and tell them they're not welcome.

These aren't anonymous internet trolls.
These are the people who run the Democrat Party.
And Bill Maher – their guy, on their network, in front of their audience – just told them exactly what that language produces.
They taught America that words cause violence.
They used that claim to deplatform conservatives, silence dissent, and justify a decade of institutional suppression.
Now their most credible celebrity witness just testified that calling Trump "Hitler McPedophile" created the conditions for someone to pull a trigger.
The argument was always true.
They just never thought it would apply to them.
