Ronald Reagan used to say the nine most terrifying words in the English language were "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."
Now even Bill Maher is saying it.
The HBO host just torched the left's entire "tax the rich" argument live on air – and the numbers he used came straight from the IRS.
What Maher Actually Said on Television
Maher told his Real Time audience something Democrats never say out loud: he pays close to 60% of his income in taxes.
Federal income tax. State tax. Local tax. Sales tax. Property tax. Fees. Obamacare surcharges.
Add them up, and the government takes more than half of every dollar he earns.
"I still wouldn't mind if Bernie Sanders would stop saying the rich don't pay taxes," Maher said. "Us regular rich people pay a s— ton of taxes."

He didn't stop there.
Maher cited Tax Foundation data showing the top 10% of earners pay 72% of all federal income taxes.
The bottom half of earners – half the country – pays 3%.
Three percent.
Then Maher asked the question every taxpayer has been screaming at their television for years: the federal government took in over $5 trillion last year, so why is a charity called Remote Area Medical still setting up folding tables in parking lots so Americans can get their teeth looked at?
He called the government "incompetent and corrupt."
Your $5 Trillion at Work
Five trillion dollars.
Enough to write every American a check for roughly $15,000 and still have money left over.
And yet Remote Area Medical – a nonprofit that started by delivering care to remote villages in Venezuela – now runs the majority of its operations inside the United States.
That's the detail Maher couldn't shake.
This is what the "soak the rich" crowd has never been able to answer: if the problem was always that the government needed more money, what happened to the $5 trillion?
Which crumbling bridge got fixed?
Which poor neighborhood got the hospital Democrats promised?
The money went somewhere.

The government didn't fail to deliver because it lacked revenue.
It failed because failure has no consequences when the answer is always "we need more."
The Part Maher Won't Say Out Loud
Maher films Real Time in Los Angeles.
He has voted for the Democrats who built this tax structure every single election.
California has the highest state income tax rate in the country at 13.3%.
The Tax Foundation found that California residents lose an average of 13.5% of their income to state and local taxes alone.
Stack that onto federal rates and you understand how Maher's math hits 60%.
He's not wrong about the numbers.

He's wrong about who caused them.
The politicians Maher has championed for decades built this system deliberately.
They designed a tax structure where high earners fund everything, declared those same earners don't pay enough, then spent $5 trillion without accountability for where it went.
He'll vote for them again in 2028.
But for one Friday night in Los Angeles, Bernie Sanders' most famous defender looked around at what his money bought – and called it what it is.
