Democrats spent the last year hemorrhaging Silicon Valley donors to the Republican Party.
Now their own socialist senator just delivered the final nail in the coffin.
And Bernie Sanders quietly handed Donald Trump the perfect weapon against Democrats.
Bernie Sanders declared war on artificial intelligence during a CNN interview Sunday, calling for a complete shutdown of data center construction across America.
"I think we need to slow this thing down," Sanders told Jake Tapper. "One way to do it would probably be a moratorium on data centers."¹
The Vermont socialist attacked tech billionaires Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos by name.
"Do you think they're staying up nights worrying about working people and how this technology will impact those people?" Sanders asked. "They are not."²
Democrats Can't Help But Attack the Future
Democrats love talking about standing up for working people against the rich and powerful.
But Sanders just proved how hollow that rhetoric really is.
These AI data centers he wants to ban are creating thousands of high-paying American jobs and positioning America to beat China in the technology race of the century.
Sanders complained that "the richest people in the world" are pushing AI development.³
The socialist senator suggested tech billionaires should provide free housing and healthcare if AI eliminates jobs.
"What are they going to do when people have no jobs?" Sanders asked. "What are they going to do, make housing free?"⁴
Nearly 3,000 AI data centers are under construction or planned across America, adding to more than 4,000 already operating, according to a December report from the American Edge Project and Technology Councils of North America.⁵
Sanders wants to kill every single one.
Trump's Silicon Valley Coup Just Got Easier
The timing couldn't be worse for Democrats.
President Trump rolled out the red carpet for Silicon Valley in 2025, hosting tech executives at the White House and unveiling his AI Action Plan in July.
Trump appointed David Sacks – a venture capitalist and podcast host – as his AI and crypto czar to cement Republican ties with the tech industry.⁶
Silicon Valley billionaires abandoned Democrats and funded Trump's 2024 campaign after Biden tried regulating them out of existence.
Now Sanders just validated every fear tech leaders had about the Democrat Party.
"It's not good enough for the oligarchs to tell us, 'It's coming, you adapt,'" Sanders declared.⁷
Trump couldn't have written better Republican propaganda if he tried.
Steve Bannon warned Republicans that getting too cozy with "arrogant" Big Tech could alienate MAGA voters.
But Sanders made that warning irrelevant by positioning Democrats as the party that wants to kill American innovation and hand China the AI race.⁸
Democrats Tearing Themselves Apart Over AI
Sanders isn't alone in his crusade.
Progressive Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have been attacking AI companies for months, demanding heavy-handed government regulation.⁹
But moderate Democrats in swing states see this as political suicide.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro welcomed Amazon's AI investments, declaring "The future of AI will run through Pennsylvania."¹⁰
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer did the same, despite constituents flooding her social media demanding she ban data centers.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries tried splitting the difference by creating an AI commission stacked with corporate-friendly Democrats.¹¹
Progressives accused him of selling out to Silicon Valley billionaires.
The Democrat Party is at war with itself over whether to embrace or destroy AI – and Sanders just handed Republicans the political weapon to exploit that chaos.
Polls show 80 percent of Americans want AI regulated.¹²
But those same polls show only 17 percent think AI will benefit the country.
Democrats saw those numbers as an opening to run against tech billionaires.
What they missed is Trump already positioned himself as the president who can harness AI for American strength while stopping China from winning.
Sanders calling for a complete ban on data centers just proved Trump's argument – Democrats would rather destroy American innovation than let billionaires profit.
The socialist senator handed Republicans the perfect wedge issue, and Democrats have no way to walk it back.
