Americans just discovered they've been getting ripped off at the drive-thru.

Fast food prices quietly crept up until nobody noticed what happened.

And Applebee's CEO revealed what two McDonald's combo meals actually cost and jaws hit the floor.

Applebee's finds the secret weapon against fast food

McDonald's built an empire on being the cheap, fast option for families watching their budgets.

But something changed while Americans weren't paying attention.

Those combo meals that used to cost $5 now run you $12 or more at most locations.

Two people eating at McDonald's can easily drop $25 before they even think about dessert.

Applebee's CEO John Peyton noticed customers doing the math and getting angry.

That's when he made his move.

The chain brought back its 2 for $25 deal – two full entrees plus an appetizer for the same price as two fast food combo meals.

Customers could get real plates of food, actual silverware, and someone serving them instead of shouting into a speaker and hoping the order comes out right.

The results shocked the entire restaurant industry.

Same-store sales jumped 4.9% in the second quarter of 2025 after Applebee's suffered through eight consecutive quarters of declining sales.

Traffic surged as customers realized they'd been overpaying for fast food when they could get an actual restaurant experience for the same money.

"We had strong performance in both traffic and sales at Applebee's during the first two quarters of the year, even into July, driven exactly by 2 for $25," Peyton told investors.

Applebee's hit rock bottom in 2023 with sales cratering and dozens of locations closing.

The chain looked dead in the water while McDonald's and other fast food giants kept raising prices and bragging about record profits.

But those price increases became Applebee's lifeline.

Applebee's goes all-in on cheese to keep momentum

The chain isn't sitting on its victory.

Applebee's just launched the O-M-Cheese Burger for $11.99 that arrives at your table in a sizzling skillet filled with melted queso and cheddar.

The burger itself comes loaded with American cheese, bacon, and spicy honey mustard, served over a pool of molten cheese that lets you dip your fries and burger with every bite.

"It doesn't get any cheesier than Applebee's new O-M-Cheese Burger," Applebee's chief marketing officer Michelle Chin said.

The timing couldn't be better.

McDonald's, Wendy's, and Burger King keep getting hammered on social media for sky-high prices while delivering the same mediocre food.

Applebee's positions itself as the better value option – real food, real service, same price as fast food garbage.

The O-M-Cheese Burger joins the 2 for $25 menu alongside returning favorites like Fiesta Lime Chicken and Oriental Chicken Salad.

Applebee's social media strategy paid off big time.

Video views on TikTok exploded by 500%, user reach jumped 760%, and video likes climbed 1,000% after the chain hired a three-person team to produce content.

The brand went from forgotten to buzzing again among younger customers who thought Applebee's was just for their parents.

But the real genius was making fast food the enemy instead of other casual dining chains.

"Our strategy is to lean into 2 for $25 as our consistent and primary marketing message for the year," Peyton explained.

Restaurant traffic fell nearly every month in 2025 as Americans cut back on dining out.

Nearly a quarter of consumers said restaurants would be the first discretionary spending they'd eliminate when money got tight.

But Applebee's found the sweet spot where customers felt they were getting real value compared to increasingly expensive fast food.

The chain's comeback proves Americans still want to eat out when they feel they're not getting ripped off.

Applebee's upgraded its sales forecast for the year to expect growth between 1% and 3% after previously projecting potential declines.

The restaurant industry as a whole is projected to hit $1.5 trillion in sales for 2025.

Applebee's grabbed market share by doing what fast food chains forgot — delivering actual value.
