AOC went on a podcast this week to explain that every billionaire in America is a criminal.
She made up a number to prove it.
And now the facts are out.
What She Said and What the Numbers Show
Appearing on comedian Ilana Glazer's podcast It's Open on May 7, Ocasio-Cortez argued that no one can legitimately earn a billion dollars.
"You can get market power. You can break rules. You can abuse labor laws. You can pay people less than what they're worth. But you can't earn that," she said.
Then she got specific.
She told listeners that Walmart workers make seven dollars an hour – barely enough to cover the gas to get to work.
One problem.

HotAir's John Sexton pulled the actual numbers: Walmart's minimum starting wage is $14 an hour, and the company's average hourly pay across its workforce is $18.25.
In New York, where AOC lives and votes, Walmart's pay exceeds the state minimum wage.
The congresswoman who says billionaires build their fortunes on myths just got caught building her argument on one.
The Framework She Won't Name
Strip away the fake statistic and what's left is a theory your audience will recognize immediately.
Karl Marx called it "surplus value theory" in 1867.
Every dollar an employer keeps, in this view, is a dollar stolen from a worker.
Profit is definitionally exploitation.
The Soviet Union built gulags on this theory.
Venezuela destroyed the richest oil economy in South America on this theory.
A sitting U.S. congresswoman is recycling it for a podcast audience as though it's a fresh observation.
When Fox News reached AOC's office for comment, her team didn't address the Walmart wage figures.
They pointed to her X post declaring that wage theft is the biggest crime in America.
She Is Not Talking About Billionaires
This is what her supporters miss.
AOC is not making a narrow argument about Jeff Bezos.
She said it plainly: "There's a certain level of wealth and accumulation that is unearned."
That sentence has no dollar threshold.
It applies to the contractor who started with one truck and now runs a crew of twelve.
It applies to the family that opened a restaurant and put three kids through college.
It applies to the farmer who bought his neighbor's land and built something worth passing on.
Every one of them, in Ocasio-Cortez's framework, got rich by breaking rules and paying people less than they're worth.
The Real Myth in This Story
When the podcast clip went viral Wednesday night, Joe Lonsdale – a co-founder of Palantir – went straight at her on X, saying she perhaps isn't bright enough to make real money without massive grift.

That reaction cuts to what this argument actually is.
AOC is not talking about tax policy or wage floors.
She is saying that the act of building a successful business is morally illegitimate.
She is telling every person who ever took a risk, hired someone, made payroll, and built something lasting – that they did it wrong.
And she said it while fabricating the statistic she used to make the case.
The myth in this story isn't the American Dream.
It's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
