The Beach Boys have always been more drama than harmony behind the scenes.
But what happened at Brian Wilson’s funeral crossed every line of human decency.
And Al Jardine just exposed Mike Love’s disgusting behavior in front of the entire music world.
Mike Love turned Brian Wilson’s funeral into his own ego trip
Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson passed away on June 11 at age 82, leaving behind one of the most influential catalogs in American music history.
You’d think Wilson’s funeral would focus on the guy who actually wrote "Good Vibrations" and "Pet Sounds" – you know, the songs that made The Beach Boys legends in the first place.
Instead, Mike Love – Wilson’s cousin and longtime bandmate – turned the August 6 funeral into his own personal awards show.
"Mike wanted everybody to know that he wrote every single word of ‘Good Vibrations,’" Al Jardine told Rolling Stone about Love’s eulogy speech.¹
Think about that for a second.
You’re at your cousin’s funeral, and instead of honoring his memory, you’re trying to steal credit for his greatest work.
"I didn’t feel the compassion, let’s put it that way," Jardine continued. "Mike’s got some serious megalomania problems."²
Jardine called out Love’s shameless self-promotion
Jardine wasn’t about to let Love rewrite history while Brian Wilson was still being laid to rest.
During his own speech at the post-funeral event, Jardine fired back with surgical precision.
"Mike, I’ve written some songs with Brian myself. We wrote one called ‘Surfin’ Down the Swanee River.’ It just wasn’t as big as ‘Good Vibrations,’" Jardine said, delivering a masterclass in how to expose someone’s BS without losing your dignity.³
The contrast couldn’t have been clearer.
"I was focusing on Brian, and Mike was more focused on Mike," Jardine explained to Rolling Stone. "I think that is what it boiled down to."⁴
And there’s the truth that everyone in that room already knew but nobody wanted to say out loud.
The decades-long feud finally exploded into public
This wasn’t just about one inappropriate funeral speech.
Love has been pulling this garbage for decades, and Jardine finally had enough.
"Mike is like P.T. Barnum," Jardine revealed. "He had these incredibly exotic ideas for tours. He was always looking at that next tour. He probably has a tour of Mars planned right now. I was going, ‘Let’s go back to the studio.’ And then he kicked me out of the band. It was pretty s—–."⁵
Wait, it gets worse.
When Jardine tried to form his own Beach Boys tribute band called "Beach Boys Family and Friends" – featuring Wilson’s own daughters – Love sicced an army of lawyers on him.
"Frankly, they were threatened by me, because my band sounded better than the Beach Boys band," Jardine explained. "Mike just came down on me with a s—load of lawyers. And pretty soon I was down about a million bucks. It was pretty devastating financially and emotionally. He showed me no mercy."⁶
What this really reveals about Hollywood egos
Here’s what this whole mess tells us about the entertainment industry.
You’ve got Brian Wilson – an actual musical genius who revolutionized popular music and influenced everyone from The Beatles to modern pop stars.
Then you’ve got Mike Love – a guy who happened to be in the right family at the right time and has spent 60 years trying to convince everyone he deserves equal credit.
The 2012 reunion tour should have been a celebration of their legacy.
Instead, Love used it as another opportunity to sideline the real talent.
"He cut us right off there," Jardine said about Love ending the reunion to go back to his "handpicked band" while leaving "Brian and I in the dust."⁷
And when Brian Wilson’s cognitive health started declining in his final years, guess who was still trying to claim credit for his work?
The same guy who thought a funeral was the perfect venue for self-promotion.
Love did write a tribute to Wilson after his death, calling him "the soul of our sound" and praising his "otherworldly" musical gifts.⁸
But actions speak louder than Instagram posts.
When it mattered most – when the cameras were rolling and the music world was watching – Love showed exactly who he really is.
Al Jardine just made sure everyone saw it.
