Ilhan Omar filmed a promotional video praising a restaurant whose owner was later convicted of stealing $16 million from a children's nutrition program.
Now a retired Minnesota State Trooper who spent 30 years putting criminals in handcuffs just walked into her district – and he's not leaving.
And Ilhan Omar’s Republican opponent had one message for her supporters that sent Democrats into full panic mode.
The Fraud That Ate Omar's District
The numbers are staggering.
Minnesota's 5th Congressional District – Ilhan Omar's district – sits at the epicenter of what federal prosecutors have called the largest COVID-era fraud in American history.
The Feeding Our Future scheme drained between $250 million and $350 million in taxpayer funds meant to feed children during the pandemic.
The founder, Aimee Bock, was sentenced to nearly 42 years in prison in May 2026.
Her co-defendant, Salim Said – co-owner of Safari Restaurant in Minneapolis – was convicted on 21 counts of wire fraud, bribery, and money laundering.
Safari Restaurant is where Ilhan Omar held her 2018 election-night watch party.

Safari Restaurant is where Omar filmed a promotional video in 2020 praising the site for serving 2,300 meals a day to children and families.
By July of that same year, Safari was claiming 5,000 meals a day – a number prosecutors later proved was a lie.
Omar's own name appeared multiple times in emails entered as court exhibits in Bock's trial, including one email chain titled "Ilhan's Office."
She refused to turn over documents to the Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee by their May 2026 deadline.
She refused to appear before the committee when called.
Republican committee chair Robbins said Omar had "completely ghosted" state lawmakers.
A subpoena failed by one vote.
The Man With the Badge and the Granddaughter
John Nagel is a Minnesota native who spent his career as a State Trooper.
He taught defensive driving, trained first responders, worked in schools, and earned the State Patrol's Meritorious Service Award.

He didn't get into politics because he was ambitious.
He got in because he has a new granddaughter.
"I'm not going to leave what we currently have in Minnesota, which is a mess," Nagel told Fox News Digital.
He won the Republican primary on August 11, 2026, defeating four other candidates with 52% of the vote.
The contrast he's drawing with Omar couldn't be sharper.
"I'm pro-American. I'm from Minnesota. I love Minnesota and I love my country," Nagel said. "I'm not involved in fraud."
He's not just running against Omar.
He's running against a decade-long pattern of Democrats in Minnesota letting fraud happen, refusing to stop it, and then pretending they didn't know.
What Democrats Don't Say Out Loud
State auditors found that Minnesota's Department of Education received at least 30 fraud complaints about Feeding Our Future between 2018 and 2021.
Officials kept approving payments anyway.
The auditors concluded they feared lawsuits and accusations of racism from the organization itself.

They were intimidated into silence by people who were stealing hundreds of millions of dollars.
"I have not met a Democrat yet that has come out and said, yeah, we really want to do something about fraud," Nagel said. "It's been just the opposite."
He's right.
Walz was governor while this happened.
His education department ignored the warnings.
Ellison was attorney general.
He received a $2,500 donation from a convicted fraudster and didn't return it until May 2025 – after recordings went public and the scrutiny became unbearable.
In 2020, Omar introduced the MEALS Act, which sought to loosen oversight requirements for federal school meal programs during the pandemic – the same oversight requirements that, when eventually waived through subsequent legislation, created the conditions fraudsters exploited.
Aimee Bock told the New York Post from jail: "I struggle to believe that she wouldn't have known."
What a Cop Sees That Politicians Miss
"When I would get to a crash scene, I didn't ask them if they were a Democrat or Republican before I gave them first aid," Nagel said. "I don't care who you are, I don't care how you voted in the past."
That's the instinct of someone who has actually served the public – not performed service for a career.

The Cook Political Report rates the 5th District as Solid D, and the political class already has this race written off.
They said the same thing about every district before a cop showed up and started asking the questions nobody else would ask.
Walz has a granddaughter too, somewhere.
Nagel is the one who showed up for his.
