Hollywood is portrayed from the outside as a glamorous place where dreams come true.

But there’s an awful underbelly that show business tries to keep hidden.

And a 1980s teen idol revealed this dark secret about working in Hollywood.

Molly Ringwald says predators are after young actresses in Hollywood

Actress Molly Ringwald was a teen idol in the 1980s when she starred in Director John Hughes’ coming-of-age hits Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink.

She was one of the brightest young stars in Hollywood and a member of the famed Brat Pack with other young actors like Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, and Anthony Michael Hall.

But Ringwald recently talked about the dark side of Hollywood working as a young actress on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast.

The Breakfast Club star said that despite her shy personality, she ended up in some harrowing situations.

“I never really felt like I was part of a community when I was in Hollywood, just because I was so young, really,” Ringwald said. “I wasn’t into going out to clubs. I feel like I’m more social now than I was then. I was just too young.”

“Well, you’re lucky you didn’t get taken advantage of or got into some sort of horrible situation,” Maron said.

“Oh, I was taken advantage of,” Ringwald replied. “You can’t be a young actress in Hollywood and not have predators around.”

She said that she got herself into some “questionable situations” but that she quickly developed a “survival instinct” to protect herself from the predators that were teeming in the industry.

Molly Ringwald is watching out for her daughter as she begins her acting career

Ringwald’s 20-year-old daughter Mathilda Gianopoulos made her movie debut in the romantic comedy The Idea of You this year.

“But, yeah, it can be harrowing,” Ringwald said. “And I have a 20-year-old daughter now who is going into the same profession, even though I did everything I could to convince her to do something else. And it’s hard.”

She said that she’s watching out carefully for her daughter because she has the show business experience that her parents didn’t have in the 1980s.

More and more has been coming about the predatory behavior of the movie business in recent years.

The scandal involving disgraced former Movie Producer Harvey Weinstein’s rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse pulled back the curtain on a side of Hollywood that was only talked about in whispers.

He solicited sexual favors from young actresses in exchange for boosting their careers.

“If Harvey Weinstein invites you to a private party in the Four Seasons, don’t go,” Actress and Musician Courtney Love warned in a 2005 interview, which everyone in the media ignored at the time.

The recent Max documentary series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV exposed the awful treatment of the child actors on the cable network Nickelodeon, including sexual assault and harassment.

Hollywood has a dark side that the movie industry tried to keep hidden for decades.

And young actresses have had to navigate a profession filled with people trying to exploit them.
