Donald Trump’s win set off global shockwaves.
The days of taking advantage of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are over.
And one foreign leader made a big mistake with this nasty threat to Trump.
Donald Trump’s mandate
The American people elected Donald Trump to get control of the border crisis.
Trump isn’t waiting to take office for action.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all goods from Mexico and Canada unless the governments of those two countries close off the flow of illegal aliens into America.
“As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before. Right now a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border,” Trump wrote.
Trump warned the tariffs would be a day-one action as a stick to induce Mexico and Canada to stem the flow of illegal aliens and deadly fentanyl into America.
“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States and its ridiculous Open Borders. This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Trump added.
Trump said Mexico and Canada could solve these problems and the days of the United States letting them get away with inaction are over.
“Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long-simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!” Trump concluded.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dealt with Trump before.
Trudeau knows Trump means business and offered a very conciliatory response.
“This is a relationship that we know takes a certain amount of working on, and that’s what we’ll do,” Trudeau said in a press gaggle. “One of the really important things is that we be all pulling together on this.”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is new to the scene.
And she thought she could bully Donald Trump by threatening retaliatory tariffs of her own.
“One tariff would be followed by another in response, and so on until we put at risk common businesses,” Sheinbaum wrote to Trump.
That’s a big mistake.
Journalist Mark Halperin said on his 2way platform that Trump is much more experienced this go round and knows where all the pressure points are when dealing with these various countries.
The United States is the biggest and most powerful nation on earth, an advantage Trump knows how to wield.
And Halperin predicted that Canada – as Trudeau’s response indicated – and Mexico would have to comply with Trump’s demands.
“They have no choice but to play ball with Donald Trump. And he’s just going to put his boot on their necks and say, ‘gimme, gimme, gimme’ . . . Not one of them can stand in the way of Donald Trump without him threatening them,” Halperin said.
“They’re not defiant because they can’t be,” says @MarkHalperin of the leaders of Canada, Mexico and China in the face of President-elect Trump’s tariff threats. “They have no choice but to play ball with Donald Trump. And he’s just going to put his boot on their necks and say,… pic.twitter.com/pGDlJAsIEM
