Home Improvement was one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1990s.
One of the most beloved members of the cast made a dramatic change.
And Tim Allen was shocked when a Home Improvement star gave him this big update.
Home Improvement’s Al Borland makes a big life change
Actor Richard Karn is best known for playing Al Borland on the ABC sitcom Home Improvement.
Borland was the straight man to Tim Allen’s character Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor on the show.
Karn got his big break in acting on Home Improvement and it changed his life forever.
He told Fox News Digital he was a literal starving artist while he was trying to get his start in show business.
When he joined the cast of Home Improvement there was a craft services table on the show with all the food he could want.
Karn admitted that he indulged a little bit too much on the show’s spread of food and packed on a few extra pounds.
“All of a sudden, you had food on the set . . . You could just eat whatever you wanted. You were going out to events where they give you food,” Karn said. “At some point, you kind of have to stop and go, ‘You know I really could eat all of this, but I shouldn’t. I can’t . . . and look at me, I’m 10 pounds more than I want to be’ . . . and everything else is just kind of in moderation.”
He and his wife of 40 years decided that they were going on a diet together to shed some extra weight.
Richard Karn finds success dieting
Karn and his wife went on a low-carb diet where they tried to watch their portions.
“We did this weight-loss thing where we [ate] four ounces of meat, four ounces of vegetables . . . no carbs or not as much carbs . . . we did that for six weeks . . . it really helped,” Karn explained. “It kind of realigned what you need . . . you don’t pile your plate as high anymore, because you don’t need it . . . after six weeks, I think your body and your mind . . . realizes that helped.”
The Home Improvement star said that “moderation” was the key to his diet.
“If you can . . . don’t have five desserts, have a bite of one,” Karn joked.
Karn was able to lose 30 pounds going on a diet but now the challenge is maintaining his weight.
“I’ve kind of evened out where I want to be . . . I went down to where my doctor was very, very happy . . . I almost felt like I looked too thin,” Karn stated.
He and Allen have remained friends since they starred on Home Improvement from 1991 to 1999.
They worked together again on the History Channel reality show, Assembly Required.
Fans could see the duo reunite again if he makes an appearance on Allen’s new ABC sitcom, Shifting Gears.
